DESCRIPTION OF HAZARDS
DWELLING:
Two storey house built in 1964
Background: The property is of traditional brick and tile construction. The kitchen has one double
and one single socket. There is only one place for the fridge/freezer to be located within the
kitchen and this requires an extension from the single socket. This has been done by the use of
plastic connectors with the cable taped to the wall as shown in the bottom photograph. Cables
have been wired into the double socket and electric boxes and are being used as extension
sockets. These are located on top of the work surface to allow other electrical appliances to be
used. There are three such extension sockets being used in this way within the kitchen. The
remainder of the electrical wiring installation within the dwelling is the original.

Justification
The loose sockets are exposed to wetting in the kitchen environment – particularly on
worktops. Live wiring could also be readily dislodged and exposed particularly if a young
child climbs up to try to reach something on the worktop or who tries to use the cabling
taped to the wall to help them climb. However, the deficiencies reported are limited to the
kitchen.

starting as the most probably, and the representative scale points for the other three
Classes).

Justification
Providing an adequate number of suitably located sockets within the kitchen, including one
dedicated for the fridge/freezer, and checking the installation to the rest of the dwelling
should ensure that the likelihood is reduced to the national average. (All work should
comply with the appropriate IEE regulations.)
