DESCRIPTION OF HAZARDS

DWELLING

Background: The building is of brick construction with a flat roof. The photograph (above right) shows part of

the path connecting similar blocks on the site. This path slopes towards the building. The bottom left

photograph shows disrepair to paving to the rear of the block. There is no external illumination to the pathway

connecting the blocks on the site nor at the rear of the block.

NB - Originally the stone steps shown in the top right photograph spanned the width of the path. The steps

have been reduced in width to create a ramp. This ramp would be assessed as part of the Hazard of Falling

on stairs etc.

Justification

The condition of paving to the rear of the block with raised and broken edges and

variations in finishes; the side path sloping towards the building and poor illumination all

increase the likelihood of a fall that could cause harm more than the national average.

(The ramp has not been taken into account.)

Justification

The unforgiving surfaces with raised and sharp edges, and the fact that the fall would be

outside justifies increasing Class II and III harms above the average, as a fall externally in

winter could be more serious for the vulnerable age group.
